Ambassador Spock
CLASS: ENGINEERING
GROUP: IDIC
FACTION: FEDERATION
It would take volumes to justly recount the life and achievements of the one known as Spock, arguably Vulcan’s most famous son. Though of course, he was a child of two worlds, because his mother came from Earth. His accolades and exploits serving aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, alongside his lifelong friends and colleagues, James T. Kirk and Leonard McCoy, are well documented elsewhere. Here, we are more concerned with his accomplishments in later life. From representing the Federation as a special envoy, which led to its historic peace accords with the Klingon Empire, to later forging the path towards the reunification of the Romulan and Vulcan peoples, one cannot consider the legacy of the galaxy without also considering Spock’s far-reaching influence.
It was nearly a century after his influential work with the Klingons that the other great power, the Romulan Star Empire, came under grave threat. Once again, Spock answered the call. Their star, Romulus, was on the verge of going supernova, and the Federation’s evacuation of Romulan citizens had failed. Spock planned to release red matter to create a black hole in the path of the supernova, which would absorb its energy and save countless Romulan lives. However, the supernova occurred sooner than he expected. Planet Romulus was destroyed before Spock could deploy the red matter, which he eventually did, minimizing further casualties. But his ship, the Jellyfish, was pulled inside the black hole – along with the vessel of Nero, a Romulan miner who’d lost his entire family in the destruction of Romulus, and had vowed revenge on Spock for his failure.
Spock was sent into the distant past, emerging in 2258. But Nero was waiting for him. He marooned Spock on Delta Vega, before using his powerful ship to destroy Vulcan, forcing Spock to share his fate. Despite the emotional devastation wrought, Spock resolved to help the surviving Vulcans rebuild their culture, founding the colony of New Vulcan, and tending it for the remainder of his days.
