Commander, unless my sensors are deceiving me, I am detecting the wreckage of the U.S.S. Excelsior, on the surface of the planet Tokona.

Running a diagnostic… My sensors are not in error, despite interference from the nebula: it is indeed the Excelsior. But how can that be? The ship has not been reported missing nor lost.

I recommend that we beam down an away team. The atmosphere is not breathable – the team should suit up, while I move us into position for transport.

The wreck is now secure. Members of the away team are making their way to the remains of the bridge.

They also report that the ship’s deflector control appears to be nonstandard, though it is too damaged to determine to what end it was modified.

From the rate of decomposition of the crew, the ship has not been here very long – perhaps only a matter of weeks. Though the cool atmospheric conditions may have preserved them somewhat.

They have found Captain Sulu’s mission log, and the bridge recorder – though there is no sign of the captain’s body. The log is encrypted, but if they transport it back here, I should be able to decipher it.

Commander, the conditions are deteriorating down there. Reposition the ship to get a secure lock on the away team, then beam them back.

I have decrypted Captain Sulu’s log. It is complete up to a stardate of two months and twenty-four days ago. Replaying the final entry:

Captain’s log, addendum: We are currently being scanned, somewhat invasively, by a Klingon Battle Cruiser, which decloaked over the planet Tokona. We are en route to intercept.

Ensign Tuvok believes there is an historical precedent for such a probing beam: V’ger, the vast, roving data archive we encountered, oh, it must be twenty years ago now.

But this vessel does appear to be Klingon. Furthermore, V’ger’s scans vaporized both the ships and crew they came into contact with.

That is the end of the log, and there is no further information in the bridge recorder. The ship must have been destroyed soon after, then fallen to the planet’s surface.

I think it is prudent to survey this system, to see if we can learn more about what happened. Though we should be wary of whatever weapon destroyed the Excelsior.

This distance should suffice. These developments are most concerning. A Romulan vessel came for us, but the Excelsior fought the Klingons. Do they both possess a powerful new weapon?

You did enough to deter them, Commander. We should leave the area before they try again – I am uncertain of the range of their destructive scanning beam.

It is also unclear whether or not they completed their scan of us. That we are still here would seem to suggest they did not. Though if we encounter an exact replica of our ship, we will know I was wrong.

Wait… A Romulan Bird-of-Prey just emerged from the nebula, configuration unknown. We are being scanned by a beam that matches Captain Sulu’s description. Red alert!

The away team has reported that the wreck is in a poor state of structural integrity. They require a shipment of Tritanium to make it safe enough to enter and investigate further.
