That artifact has documented on it the final moments of a species that lived on that planet. And like you said, it’s from centuries ago.

Yeah, and? I mean, I’m a history buff too, but I’d hardly call that a life-or-death situation.

Because, Pike, I think the artifact has info on what wiped the planet out. And I think whatever did it… is still out there somewhere.

And how did you come to that conclusion?

I found a similar artifact by chance a while back. It had also been left by a non-extinct civilization, also a few centuries ago. It had coordinates on it. So I went, but I couldn’t see anything.

What, there was no sun in the system?

It was more like… have you ever been on a planet, where there’s fog so thick you can see your own hands in front of your face? It was like that, but an entire solar system.

And… something approached me. I couldn’t see what. But I could hear it. Like… a swarm of angry hornets.

I’d heard that sound once before. On the artifact, the first one I found. It was unmistakably the same noise… That droning.

For a split second, I was able to think clearly and warp out of there. But whatever’s in that system, it’s wiped out planets before. And I’m sure it can do it again.

That’s… a lot to take in. But I believe you. So here’s my offer. I won’t arrest you. I’ll buy you some time with Starfleet. Keep Norman safe, and negotiate for the artifact with his son.

And if you hand over the artifact, I’ll make sure any charges are dropped… Assuming the artifact is as important as you think it to be. Pike out.

I guess we don’t have a choice. Better get in touch with Sanuva’s family. Hopefully they can put us in touch with Jarron.

That will not be necessary. Jarron Sanuva is outside our Station.

Fine, but I have a tendency to anger Starfleet officers when I speak to them. Probably because of my barely contained distaste for their organization, but anyway…
