We have arrived back at the fleet. I sent word to Chancellor Azetbur, before we departed and lost contact. She sends her hopes for Captain Spock’s swift recovery, and awaits news on his health.

She can keep waiting until I know what’s wrong with him. Best I can tell, he’s in a self-induced coma, perhaps to help him withstand whatever the hell this is. But his vitals are good, if a little elevated.

Well wishes are all well and good, but I would have liked a few Klingon ships to help us out. What kind of allies are these Klingons?

V’ger and Spock shared some sort of telepathic connection before. Could something like that be responsible for this? I wish Jim were here. He’d know what to do.

But he isn’t, so it’s up to us. Beam us back to the Enterprise – I want Spock in a sickbay I’m at least somewhat familiar with. I’ll update Captain Sulu with a full report. Scotty, you ready to go?

We have lost many ships, relay stations, and warriors, seemingly to our Federation allies – and even from within, to the remnants of House Hurak.

But you were right to doubt your eyes. We have studied these enemies – or should I say, facsimiles. Starfleet Command has concluded that V’ger is responsible.

Commander, I understand you’ve been keeping busy with my colleagues. Spock told me about the replica ships and crews. It is quite alarming, especially if V’ger has returned. Starfleet has been informed.

I always wondered if V’ger would pay us another visit, on its long journey through the universe. It’s been twenty years since we encountered it aboard the Enterprise, when I was but a mere helmsman.

I don’t know if you know the story: A giant, sentient ship, with massive destructive power entered the Sol System. This was V’ger. Captain Kirk intercepted it merely hours away from Earth.

Phase

Sulu
Dialogue
At its heart was Voyager 6, a deep space probe launched from Earth in the late 20th century – hence the name it took: V’ger. It had somehow been augmented by an advanced machine race.

Phase

This race sent it back on its way, so that it could complete its purpose: scanning and archiving data into a vast imaging system. Unfortunately, this was a destructive act, vaporizing and killing its subjects.

But this allowed V’ger to amass enough information to become self-aware. It wanted to meet its creator, and was thus making its way back to Earth. Many lives were lost, including two members of our crew.

If you are referring to Captain Decker and Lieutenant Ilia, the official record states that they are missing in action, not deceased.

Phase

Character
Sulu
Dialogue
Yes, it does. I can’t explain it, but neither can those that were there. Somehow, V’ger merged with Captain Decker, its creator if you will, as a human, and Lieutenant Ilia, despite her being Deltan.

And now V’ger appears to have returned to us. Is it a threat once more? It would seem to be so. I should have recognized that energy cloud immediately, or at least trusted my instincts.

But come, Commander. You’ve listened to an old man prattle on long enough. I have convened a meeting of the fleet aboard the fully-repaired – and upgraded – Excelsior, to share Starfleet’s new orders.

It’s beginning to churn out new ships again: Federation, Romulan, Klingon – you name it, it’s here. V’ger’s got its own wee production line going on. It won’t be long before they mount another offensive.

Starfleet has been withholding knowledge of the missing vessels – there have been more disappearances recently than we thought. Now we know where V’ger has been getting its blueprints from.

Spock
Dialogue
It should be noted that although the last time we met V’ger, it engineered a probe replica of Lieutenant Ilia, it did not show the capacity to manufacture fleets of ships. Though the leap is not entirely illogical.

In addition, the energy cloud we find ourselves within is less than half the strength of V’ger’s then twelfth-power field, despite its larger scale, which engulfs many systems.

The cloud also appears to be static, relative to the movement of the planetary systems through space – again, unlike V’ger, which moved with its cloud towards Earth.

It is possible, Doctor. But I also believe that, if this indeed were V’ger, having evolved to a higher state of being – as we both witnessed – it would not engineer such a conflict.

I hear you. But whatever its motivations, it has shown clear and coordinated hostile intent. Given the other similarities, Starfleet has concluded that V’ger has returned. Our orders are to stop it.

That is why the Excelsior comes bearing gifts. Not only are we fighting fit once again, but our deflector array has been modified to counteract the cloaking technology V’ger is using on its ships.

But we can’t rely on technology alone. Times like these call for strong alliances, which is why it is imperative we reach the Klingons. The Empire’s communications are down, and I think we know why.
