Captain, we have arrived in the Sorethna system. We appear to have remained undetected.

Thank you, Ensign. Now, let’s fill the sensor banks to the brim with all the data we can about these cloaked vessels. Which means tempting them to decloak and fire. Lojur, you have your heading.

Let’s hope the interference from the nebula doesn’t alert the rest of the Federation task force to our presence. We have a very specific mission, and I’d rather not risk unwarranted casualties.

Commander, since we are still in the dark, I recommend we replay Captain Sulu’s log from an earlier stardate. I can also insert recorded bridge audio, where relevant.

I have found a pertinent point from which to begin the log. I shall output to the bridge, so your senior crew may listen as well. Make yourselves comfortable, everyone.

Captain’s log, stardate… What the hell is the stardate? I guess I’ve had too much on my mind. I’m sure the log records the date automatically, anyhow.

Now where was I? The reason, dear listener, why my mind is somewhat out of sorts lately, is because the Excelsior is returning from perhaps the strangest battle of my entire life.

We are in urgent need of repairs – and new orders – but that is not what concerns me. What concerns me is that we encountered Klingons and Romulans working together.

But it’s worse than that, as Dr McCoy might say: Federation starships fought alongside them as well! With cloaking technology! But none of the ships appeared to match the usual cloaking tells.

So yes, it’s like having the great bird of the galaxy perched on my shoulders. Which is why we must reach Starbase 87 with utmost haste.

Captain’s log, stardate 9771.4. The Admiralty Board seemed to take the news of cloaked Federation starships working with the Romulans and Klingons wholly in their stride.

I can’t help but feel they’re hiding something. That’s not surprising, when it transpires more Starfleet vessels have vanished than initially reported.

Still, at least their engineering team has a plan: they want to modify the Excelsior’s deflector array, so that it can emit a pulse that will decloak these ships.

I’m not sure what Scotty will make of mutilating the ship like that, but I have to say, it would at least give me some options. Right now, I feel like I’m fencing with a foil in a saber match.

Though before we can even think about upgrades, we need to return to the battle. The backroom boffins can’t work their magic without detailed sensor data on this new type of cloak.

Excellent! That should do for these Klingon ships. There’s only so long we can tag them and move on, before we bite off more than we can handle.
